OMG - we actually slept until 10:30 a.m. which never happens here or at home. We were that relaxed, but not rested. So when we got up we headed toward Avignon, got bread and other goodies at Jouvaud, hit the Biocoop in Cavaillon and got the other things for this evening's barbecue with friends at Intermarche in Cavaillon. Definitely trying to improve my spelling here as I seem to have botched many names but I will be going back through the blog to correct.
One dessert worth mentioning, friends brought to the last barbecue - a St. Tropezienne -which is a light cake layered in the middle with fresh whipped cream. It is not something that I would ordinarily order, but it was a lovely light dessert. Our friends said that they had several of these in different restaurants throughout southern France during their stay but this was the best, from a Boulangerie in Gordes called Mamie Jane.
As always, today's bread from Jouvaud won the annual bread quest hands down. We ate last night's leftovers and added salad and a dessert from Jouvaud, the cherry crumble with creme fraiche.
For this evening, I am planning a fresh pot of ratatouille, and a salade mixte. Possibly even a fresh risotto but we'll see how much time and energy I have, as it is quite hot here, almost 100 degrees F.
We notice that despite the heat, even those who have HVAC are reluctant to turn it on during the day, using it only for sleeping. We spoiled Americans want to be cool all day, just like home.
Yesterday, we visited the flea market outside Avignon. The French are quite specific about what to call the markets, whether it is antiques or vintage, each has a specific designation. This is a hodge-podge flea market, where we did find one diamond in the rough, the 1950's milk can pictured above for a nominal sum. Add the flowers and voila. Like a Van Gogh painting brought to life.
