French 101

So, we started out classes this week at Alliance Francaise. I was definitely terrified going in to the classroom, afraid I would not be able to keep up as I quickly recognize that of the ten or so people in the room, I am definitely the oldest. Afraid that my mind cannot keep up and learn something so new and foreign, but I have been pleasantly surprised. The teacher, Marie-Rose is delightful, she explains well, her French is understandable to me, I am learning, and it is making sense. The drive into NYC is not as difficult as we anticipated, and the location, although on the east side of Manhattan, easy parking if we are there before 7 p.m. for the 7:20 p.m. class. When we leave at 9p.m. we are not yet bogged down in traffic from Broadway shows, and probably because of the economy, there are not as many cars on the road.

The class is full of interesting people, vast majority women, who have a broad array of professions, from the fashion industry, to civil engineering, to court interpretation, and another attorney, and so on. Others speak Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Korean, but here we are, all learning French for business and/or travel. Fascinating. The classes are full, beginners and advanced, and the building seems bursting with activity.

And so, we continue for 9 weeks, one down, eight to go.
